02 How a product earns confidence

How a product earns confidence

A working design is only the beginning. NPI has to turn failure into knowledge, correction into evidence, and evidence into confidence at scale.

At a third-party laboratory, I learned that evidence has to survive outside the team that created it. For regulated products, it can decide market access.

In NPI, its deeper job is to turn what failed into what the product becomes next.

2.1

Validation challenges the claim

A test is useful when it can change the team's model of the product. A pass confirms a condition. A gap reveals an assumption.

Validation is not approval. It is a challenge to the design.

The point is not to finish the test. It is to sharpen the next decision.

2.2

A failure is not yet an explanation

Root cause is the chain of conditions that made the failure possible. The failed component may be the endpoint, not the origin.

Design, process, material, firmware and use environment can all belong to the same mechanism.

A correction matters only when it breaks that chain. Revalidation proves whether it did.

2.3

Confidence has to scale

One explained failure is knowledge. Statistics decides whether it travels.

Gage R&R separates measurement variation from product variation. LSL and USL define the margin. Cp and Cpk compare it with the 6σ process spread. Reliability tests whether time takes it away.

Confidence is not a stack of passes. It is an explanation that survives scale.
